Google is rolling out a significant update to Chrome's AI Mode that fundamentally changes how users interact with multiple tabs and web content. The new features, now available to users in the United States, enable the AI chatbot to better understand context across different pages and maintain conversation history as you navigate between websites.
The centerpiece of this update is a side-by-side interface that appears when you click a link while using AI Mode on Chrome desktop. This layout lets you view a new webpage alongside the chatbot window, allowing you to ask questions about the content without losing the original context. For example, while researching coffee makers, you can visit a manufacturer's product page and ask the AI clarifying questions like "how easy is this to clean?" without needing to specify which model you're asking about.
Beyond link handling, Google has expanded AI Mode's capabilities to work with multiple existing tabs. Users can now select a group of tabs from a redesigned Plus menu and have the chatbot incorporate that information into new searches. The Plus menu also allows you to include additional materials like images and PDF files alongside relevant tabs, creating a more comprehensive knowledge base for the AI to reference.
During internal testing, Google observed that these integration improvements reduced unnecessary tab switching and helped users maintain better focus on their tasks. The company views these enhancements as part of a larger initiative to embed practical AI functionality directly into the browsing experience, rather than treating the chatbot as a separate tool.
Mike Torres, vice-president of product for Chrome, emphasized that today's rollout represents Google's commitment to making AI more useful within the browser itself. The company plans to expand these features to additional regions beyond the United States in the coming months, signaling a broader push to integrate AI assistance into Chrome's core browsing capabilities globally.
